Chlorine dioxide

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful oxidant and disinfectant often used for secondary disinfection applications e.g. hospitals. It is added to boost the residual chlorine disinfectant provided by mains water and provide protection against the likes of legionella. Chlorine dioxide is also used as an oxidant for metals removal in raw water treatment and other applications where process water needs to be disinfected to reduce algal growth such as cooling systems.

Although chlorine dioxide can be measured via colorimetry, it is more frequently measured with an online amperometric chlorine dioxide sensor with a membrane to provide selectivity.
