Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)

Online ORP sensors are used in a wide variety of applications, but are often associated with the measurement of disinfectants in water such as chlorine and ozone. ORP measurement is used as a surrogate measurement to indicate the activity of these disinfectants.

ORP measurement is also used in to monitor the destruction of compounds such as cyanide.

ORP sensors use a Ag/AgCl reference electrode and the measurement result indicates the net status of all the oxidation and reduction reactions in the sample being measured.

A positive ORP value indicates an oxidising environment and a negative ORP value indicate a reducing environment.

As with pH, an ORP value does not indicate a particular concentration of any particular oxidizing agent or reducing agent but rather it’s a measurement of activity in the sample.
