Chlorophyll a

Chlorophyll sensors enable direct monitoring of algae and phytoplankton growth. Surface waters that have high levels of chlorophyll a often contain high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen nutrients. These nutrients cause the algae to grow into a bloom.

UV-Vis absorbance spectroscopy is a way of measuring chlorophyll a concentrations in surface water. Chlorophyll a absorbs light at low visible wavelengths and high visible wavelengths and using both absorption peaks enables accurate measurement.
