Sulphate

Most sulphates are highly soluble in water and are naturally occurring.  Elevated levels of sulphate (or sulfate) in natural water sources are often due to industrial discharges. Sulphates and sulphuric acid products are used in the production of fertilizers, chemicals, dyes, glass, paper, soaps and textiles. An increasing number of industrial manufacturers are seeing a sulphate discharge consent being added to their discharge permit.

Sulphate is typically measured optically using a turbimetric method but an ion selective electrode approach can also be adopted if the background turbidity in the sample makes optical measurement difficult.
