Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (or BOD) is a typical measurement undertaken to assess the efficacy of a wastewater treatment process. By measuring the inlet BOD, the amount of organic material coming into the works can be gauged and by measuring the effluent, how effective the treatment has been can be defined. It is different to COD (chemical oxygen demand) in that COD measures all the organic material that can be oxidised whereas BOD just defines the biodegradable organic matter.

In wastewater applications, online BOD measurement can be used to determine the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms to remove the organic material present in the water. Whilst it has traditionally be achieved by a manometric method or dilution method over 5 days (known as BOD5), online BOD sensors utilise the UV absorbance of organic material to estimate BOD in real time.
