Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)

Chemical Oxygen Demand is a sum measure of all the organic material in a water sample that can be oxidised by a specific combination of chemicals. Online COD measurement using the UV absorbance method is a well established alternative to the traditional dichromate lab method.

COD measurement via UV absorbance measures the organic material that can absorb UV light and a certain amount of calibration on site is required in order for it to correlate with the dichromate standard method.

An alternative method that uses ultrasonic wave velocity can also be utilised and tends to be used in applications where Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is higher such as in breweries.

Wastewater effluent compliance monitoring solutions

Ensuring discharge compliance for COD, BOD and ammonia can lead to multiple instruments being required and maintained, increasing the complexity for operators. A complete effluent water quality station can be created using s::can sensors.

River Water Pollution Monitoring

This truly spectacular case study demonstrates what can be achieved using s::can sensors in a complete water quality monitoring station setup. In this case, the s::can system was designed to capture pollution events along the entire length of a river to both define the baseline water quality, and identify point sources of pollution.

Pollution Monitoring in sea water

By deploying an autarkic sensor system consiting of a titanium s::can spectro::lyser, a research team was able to understand COD and turbidity levels in the harbour and gain a better understanding of the sources of eutrophication.

Online COD monitoring in brewery applications

Grab samples to demonstrate compliance with COD discharge consents are a common way for breweries to manage their wastewater, but there are several advantages to be had by using online COD monitoring.

COD effluent monitoring in dairy applications

Ensuring compliance with any COD discharge consents is an important part of a manufacturers monitoring regime, in this case study, the dairy went further and reduced product loss.
